August 1, 2006 Storm Damage
On August 1, 2006, an
extremely strong weather front moved along the Wasatch Front. In
most area, the result was a few minutes of extremely heavy rainfall, in
a few localized areas, there was damage due to high wind and localized
flooding.
One of those areas that suffered damage was in the Millcreek area -
where Glen lives - and here are a few pictures of the damage.
Was it just a high wind, a microburst, a tiny tornado? The
anemometer recorded a peak of 85 miles an hour - enough to cause plenty
of damage on its own.
Video
during the storm:
Here are some video clips that captured the fury of the storm. As
you can see, it started out fairly calmly - and then a squall line
moved through, knocking over the trees and rearranging the
landscape. As quickly as it happened, most of the fury was gone -
but the extremely heavy rain overflowed the rain gutters on the house
within just two minutes of the first drops - which fell about a minute
before these videos begin.
These videos are in MPEG1 format with no sound. To view
them, you may need to right-click on the link and then save them to
your hard drive and them play them from there.

- View across the
street - If you look carefully, you can see that the large tree
across the street has fallen - but the one in the foreground mostly
blocks the view... (4.47 meg)
- View of the

the bottom-left corner of the screen - and, after the wind-driven rain
subsides somewhat, see that the tree across the street has fallen into
the street. (5.87 meg)
